November Girl

Maris is as lovely as she can be. I met her at my vintage booth after having found her on myspace...cyber friends rule!!! Quite the entrepreneur, she hosts her own night called Happy Valley Friday nights downtown Nashville.
Name: Maris Hickey

Interests: My life pretty much revolves around art, music, fashion, and throwing parties (Happy Valley). Other little things I enjoy in life are (in no particular order)... Strawberry ice cream with sprinkles on top, gramophones, tea, tuxedo t-shirts, yoga, bike rides around a cool southern city, putting peacock feathers in my hair, outdoor concerts and hanging out on a comfy blanket.

How long have you lived in Nashville? I moved to Nashville when I was 4 years old. For a period of 4 years I was on Nashville-hiatus while I attended college, so I'd say a spotty 20 years.

What do you love about Nashville? Cowboy boots and southern rock and roll.

What do you hate about Nashville? The conservative side and not enough vegetarian restaurants!

What is your favorite Nashville spot? I can always go for a drink at the Boundry.

Who is your favorite Nashvillian living or dead? Bettie Page.

I am up. I cannot sleep. For some reason the holiday season sends me into high anxiety...why? Because I work in retail at the moment. Just the mere thought of having to deal with holiday shoppers sends my blood pressure through the roof. Why is it that Americans have to stress over buying at this time of year? People seriously go mad, and they are not pleasant to be around. Don't get me wrong, I am a big advocate for shopping. However, I enjoy shopping for others at my own leisure not just because the calendar tells me to. If I find something special for someone I buy it, even if there is no occasion. So I guess what I am trying to say is enjoy the season, try not to stress about the small stuff like finding the perfect gift. Enjoy the company of those you love because that is really what it is all about.

If you are hitting the sales today...have fun and happy hunting!!!

Pretty Baby

I watched this film last night for the first time. It was highly controversial in its time because it portrays a 12 year old Brooke Shields as a prostitute. That aside, it also stars Susan Sarandon and the costumes are amazing!!!!

Project bedroom #1

I have been a bit crazy lately trying to juggle work, unpacking, boyfriend, vintage blah blah. Thus the reason for the quick posts here and there. Remember my "paint it black" post? Well here is what I was painting black. My curio cabinet which holds my dollies and my most prized magazines. I also painted my lingerie drawer!!! I got the knobs on sale at Anthropologie for $3 each, what a bargain! I am working on making my bedroom at my moms house really great since I will be living here for a while. I am going for a bohemian boudoir look sort of hippie commune chic! I will post my progress as it goes....

p.s. We got Kittens!! Edward and Nina bean...Edward is going to be a Brooklyn Kitten!!!

Colorforms

Does anyone remember Colorforms? While online shopping for Christmas presents for my niece and nephew, I realized that colorforms still exist. I remember when I was a kid I had a set of Rainbow Bright colorforms, they were actually quite entertaining. I don't think kids today would understand it, as they need moving pictures and video games to occupy themselves. I think I am going to buy a set for myself for nostalgia, hoping to get my hands on the Kiss set!!

Guatemalan worry dolls

My mom bought me some Guatemalan worry dolls when I was a kid because I always had trouble falling asleep. They actually really helped! Not only are they functional, they are adorable too!! I just love the different colors shapes and sizes!!!

heres the scoop.

Worry dolls, or trouble dolls, are very small dolls originally made in Guatemala. A person (usually a child) who cannot sleep due to worrying can express their worries to a doll and place it under their pillow before going to sleep.
According to folklore, the doll is thought to worry in the person's place, thereby permitting the person to sleep peacefully. The person will wake up without their worries, which have been taken away by the dolls during the night.
The dolls are about 1/2 to 2 inches (13 mm to 50 mm) tall and handmade using wood or wire as a frame, cotton fabric and thread for clothing and cardboard for its body and face, although they can be made from clay. Worry dolls are often sold as a fair trade item. Worry dolls are now part of Guatemalan culture and are very popular.
